Golf Tournament
CHUF’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament took place at Ryton Golf Club, Clara Vale, Ryton on Friday 18th June 2010 with a shotgun start at 1pm.
Lucky for us this year the weather was kind! Blue skies and sunshine made for a fantastic day. There was a great turnout with 16 teams participating and 11 volunteers on the day which started with bacon sandwiches and coffee.

The course was in first class condition with the greens absolutely immaculate. The golfers all tee’d off in high spirits hoping to take away one of our many team and individual prizes. The first 10 teams would receive prizes with the winning team taking away the coverted CHUF golf team trophy, £200 in golf vouchers, individual glass trophies, polo shirts embroidered with the CHUF logo and date etc, 4 ball at Northumberland golf club and a bottle of champagne. There was also a re-introduction of the Par 3 Trophy and the usual longest drive and nearest the pin prizes.
After all the golfers were back in the scorecards were checked whilst they sat down to a 3 course meal. This consisted of home-made pate to start, home-made steak pie with new potatoes and veg for mains and chocolate cake for pudding. Everyone agreed that the food was second to none as had been their game of golf.
We kicked off the evening with our special guest, Mr Ernie Coe, an after dinner speaker who had us all in stitches with his “rural humour”. Ernie also hosted our auction which raised a load of money on the night.
The presentation to the golfers was made by Dr Simon Haynes (Chairman, CHUF Trustees) and Nicola Whinham (Chairman, CHUF Fundraising Committee). This years winning team was Biotech (who only actually played with 3 players) who won with a fantastic score of 90. Biotech also won the Par 3 Trophy, so well done to them.

We finished off with the raffle which had around 30 prizes to chose from including golf shirts, jumpers, jackets and golf balls to name but a few.
The England game was also on the same evening so we wrapped things up in time for kick off and had another competition where you had to guess the time of the first goal – well we all know that didn’t happen, so a name was picked at random. This was a quick and easy fundraiser to organise and raised about £80 with very little effort but to maximum effect so well worth doing.
All in all it was a most enjoyable day with many golfers commenting that it was one of the best.
Many thanks go to Ryton Golf Club, Clara Vale for allowing us to use their facitities on the day and to the secretary Keith for his help leading up to the tournament. Huge thanks to Agnes, Peter and their staff for the amazing food, hospitality and service on the day, before and after the event. We could not have been made to feel more welcome than we did on Friday. A special thank you goes to Mr Ernie Coe who supplied his services free of charge, a fantastic guesture I’m sure you’ll agree?
Thanks also go to the many volunteers who gave up their time to help on the day. We are also grateful to everyone who donated raffle/auction/team prizes for the day. Without all of you events like this would not be possible or as sucessful.
If this soulds fun to you and you would like to be involved next year or would maybe like to make a donation towards the prizes, then please contact Lorraine at the CHUF office on 0191 213 1365.
Hope to see you at next year’s tournament!
