Benefits, Risks & Safety Precautions

IMPORTANT: There are benefits, risks and safety precautions that you must take into consideration before doing a cold water dip, please read carefully before you sign up.

Benefits of cold water exposure:

  • Triggers the release of endorphins, natural mood boosters that can reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being.
  • Improves circulation by constricting blood vessels, which can then dilate as the body warms up, leading to better blood flow.
  • Can enhance mental resilience, building a sense of accomplishment.
  • Helps reduce muscle inflammation and speed up recovery after physical activity.
  • May help boost the immune system.

Potential Risks:

  • Cold Shock – entering cold water can cause a sudden, dramatic increase in heart rate and breathing, known as cold shock which can be dangerous.
  • Hypothermia – prolonged exposure to cold water can lead to hypothermia, a dangerous condition where the body’s temperature drops below normal.
  • Other risks include frostbite and difficulty breathing.

 Safety Precautions:

  • Enter the water slowly, allowing your body to gradually adjust to the cold.
  • Don’t go out of your depth, ensure you can always stand up and swim safely.
  • Focus on slow, steady breaths.
  • Take warm clothing to wrap up after your dip.
  • Do not dip for longer than 10 minutes.
  • Do not dip alone.
  • Do not take a warm bath straight after an icy dip.

* Please note that Cold Toes, Warm Hearts is a challenge intended only for people who are fit and healthy enough to take part safely. If you’re in any doubt, please consult a medical professional first.
