The Transplant Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of organ donation and transplantation, encourage transplant patients to regain their fitness and socialise with other families on a similar journey, as well as increasing awareness of the Organ Donation Register. The games also seek to thank and celebrate donor families for their gift of life.
The British Transplant Games take place each year around the UK with The World Transplant Games and The Winter Transplant Games taking place every 2 years all over the world.
This year, CHUF provided funding for 19 heart transplant patients and their families to participate in the Games. The 2018 British Transplant Games took place in Birmingham over 4 scorching hot days in August. As you can see, our Heart Heroes had a great time!
As well as the huge value of regaining fitness and taking part in healthy physical activities, there are huge social benefits to the Transplant Games too.
Many of the children who attend the Games speak about how much they enjoy meeting with other children who have had the same experiences. Parents enjoy seeing their child thrive and from meeting other families who understand the unique challenges of transplantation. As well as experiencing the wide ranging benefits of the Games, many of our inspirational heart heroes win medals in their chosen sports.
CHUF is proud to provide funding for families to attend the games each year. This year, we were delighted to have 19 families sign up to take part and we and would love to grow the team next year.
