All at CHUF were saddened to hear of the passing of one of the founding members of CHUF, Dr Stewart Hunter.
Dr Hunter specialised in paediatric cardiology and researched throughout his career to improve medical treatment for infants and young people. He brought his expertise to the North East where one of his later roles, in 1977, was at the department of Paediatric Cardiology at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne.
His career is a list of achievements which is perhaps most notable for the many clinicians of varying backgrounds with who he collaborated, supported, taught and developed over the years.
In 1979, £70,000 was raised for a much-needed Phased Array Scanner; an innovative piece of equipment to change how a diagnosis was made without invasive procedure. Dr Hunter was instrumental in raising money for this equipment and visited many venues telling people about the work of the department.
This was just the beginning of the Children’s Heart Unit Fund and we continue to honour the work of Dr Stewart Hunter by striving to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with heart conditions.
