CHUF have received a donation of £38,000 in cryptocurrency, thought to be the largest cryptocurrency donation to a UK charity.
As the UK went into lockdown, we launched an appeal to raise £15,000 in just eight weeks so we could continue our response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The appeal travelled all the way to the US, seeing two generous donors giving £38,000 in cryptocurrency.
The life-changing donation was made using the platform The Giving Block which is well-known in the US, but CHUF is currently one of only two charities using it in the UK. The donation will allow us to continue the new ways of supporting those in need we have implemented in response to the changing needs of Heart Heroes since lockdown began.
Cryptocurrency uses cryptographical functions to conduct financial transactions online. It allows cryptocurrencies to be sent directly between two parties via the use of private and public keys, and transfers can be done with minimal processing fees.
Dan Bainbridge, one of the two generous donors, pledged just over $10,000 to the charity. He said: “I was a heart operation baby and have been personally supported by CHUF all of my life. I’ve always wanted to give back and now working in cryptocurrency I saw an opportunity to help CHUF get setup to accept cryptocurrency donations (bitcoin and ethereum) online.
“I helped to connect the charity donation platform The Giving Block in the US with CHUF and make their profile. At the time there was actually a Covid-19 campaign due to start where a further $250,000 had been allocated to match donations received from the public. When the campaign went live I donated in $10,000 worth of cryptocurrency, and by the end of the campaign, with one other large donation from the public and fund matching from the Covid-19 campaign fund, CHUF received £38,000 total, which blew us all away. It was an astounding result.”
Charlotte Campbell, Director of Fundraising and Operations at CHUF, said: “We are beyond grateful and really overwhelmed by this generosity in our time of need. We never expected to receive a donation of this amount and we are incredibly thankful to Dan, our mystery donor and The Giving Block for making this happen.
“The Coronavirus pandemic has been one of the biggest challenges we have ever faced. Our Heart Heroes and their families have needed CHUF more than ever, all while fundraising came to a standstill overnight.
“People have given generously and having these vital funds means we can put even more focus into supporting our Heart Families during these hard times. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has helped us.”
Alex Wilson, Co-Founder of The Giving Block, added: “We regularly see large donations from corporate donors through our site but even though donations through cryptocurrency are more popular than ever, it is rare to see donations of this size from individual givers. We are delighted that this money will be used to help Heart Families in the UK and look forward to continuing to work with Charlotte and the rest of the team at CHUF to keep the momentum going.”
