Freeman Team take on highest peak in England

In August 2018, staff from Freeman Hospital’s PICU and Cardiothoracic theatres took on the challenge of climbing Scafell Pike in the Lake District. The 40-strong team, including Mr Asif Hasan, chose to raise funds for CHUF and climb the 978 peak on one of the hottest days of the year! This team works incredibly hard to save the lives of our heart heroes and help team to recover, often working extremely long and hard shifts at the hospital. CHUF is immensely grateful (and very impressed!) that they chose to use their own time to raise funds to provide even more help and support to our heart heroes and their families.

The team trained hard to get ready for their climb and shared photos of how it was going. They were very committed to reaching their fundraising target and making sure the whole team reached the top! Here are a few photos of their training

The team’s efforts weren’t just focussed on the climb. To help them get to their £1000 target, they also ran activities in the hospital to raise extra funds. They set up a fundraising table and asked people to guess Mr Chufty’s name and how many sweets are in the jar.

Just before the climb, Charlene Short who organised the activity said:

“We wanted to do a challenge that not many of us had done but that all of us could do. Wanted to do the 3 peaks in UK over the 3 days but was unrealistic so decided to start with Scafell since it is closest. Hopefully we will do the other two at some point. Everyone is really excited and raring to go!

Everyone reached the top and although it was tough at times (and very hot!), they certainly seemed to have enjoyed the experience. The team all proudly sported their CHUF T-shirts and managed to get some great photos along the way. A few members of the team commented that the stairs at Freeman hospital proved to be a challenge the next day!

The team has now exceeded their £1000 target and their JustGiving page is still open. If you would like to make a donation to the page and congratulate them for completing their challenge, click here.

CHUF would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who took part in the climb. They’ve gone over and above to change the lives of our heart heroes and their families. We think they’re brilliant! Take a look at these fantastic photos of the team:
