The Transplant Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of organ donation and transplantation, encourage transplant patients to regain their fitness and socialise with other families on a similar journey, as well as increasing awareness of the Organ Donation Register.
The games also seek to thank and celebrate donor families for their gift of life.
The British Transplant Games take place each year around the UK with The World Transplant Games and The Winter Transplant Games taking place every 2 years all over the world. In 2019 CHUF supported the Freeman Children’s team to attend the British Transplant games at a total cost of £14,300.
CHUF is proud to fund families attending the games each year and would love to grow the team! If you would like more information about attending the games please get in touch!
The Clown Doctors North East is a programme produced by TIN Arts and funded by The Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF). The Clown Doctors visit Ward 23 and PICU at the Children’s Heart Unit Freeman Hospital (Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), twice a week, engaging with young people of all ages.
TIN Arts and CHUF have been working together, to explore the opportunities around engaging with Heart Heroes at home and had initiated the ‘Beyond the Walls’ pilot; a piece of research exploring how The Clown Doctors could connect virtually with Heart Hero children in their communities. Our work became acutely relevant once isolation and subsequently lockdown commenced, as a result of the COVID 19 crisis. We knew we had to act fast, to reach out to children and young people across the Country who, as a result of to their Heart conditions, were self-isolating and in need of distraction, entertainment and light relief!
We are delighted to bring you The Beat Squad. A tailor made online platform, with videos to watch, activities to engage with and ideas of things to do. We have developed The Beat Squad online community for Heart Heroes; however, we are mindful that ALL children and young people are living through extraordinary and uncertain times and therefore want to reach out to you all.
Helping people to achieve their dreams is at the heart of everything we do at CHUF.
We were recently asked to support our Heart Hero Lily to enable her to attend a school residential to Lockerbie by providing her with a SATS monitor to take with her on the trip. Lily’s family raised money towards the SATS monitor so that children like Lily are able to use the monitor if they are given the opportunity to go away with school. The monitor will give reassurance to everyone whilst away, should the child become unwell, or need monitoring when being more active than usual. CHUF funded the shortfall between that which the family raised and the cost of the monitor.
By providing Lily with a SATS monitor, her teachers were able to monitor her oxygen saturation levels throughout her stay enabling her to take part in the various activities alongside her classmates.
A huge thank you must go to Lily and her family for fundraising and providing this opportunity which other Heart Heroes can benefit from going forward. If your child requires use of a SATS monitor for a school trip or a similar activity, get in touch to find out how we can help.
